Former Democratic congresswoman turned intelligence chief Tulsi Gabbard has resigned as Director of National Intelligence in President Donald Trump’s administration, triggering a political firestorm across Washington.
According to multiple verified reports published Friday, Gabbard submitted her resignation effective June 30, citing a devastating personal reason: her husband has reportedly been diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer.
In her resignation letter, first reported by Fox News and later confirmed by outlets including Axios and El País, Gabbard thanked Trump for “the trust” he placed in her during her tenure overseeing the U.S. intelligence community.
But while the official explanation centers on family, political observers are already questioning whether deeper tensions inside Trump’s national security circle also played a role.
Recent reports had pointed to growing disagreements within the administration over Iran policy and foreign intervention. Earlier this year, Trump publicly acknowledged that Gabbard was “a little bit different” from him in her thinking, though he insisted he still had confidence in her leadership.
The resignation comes during an especially turbulent period for Trump’s intelligence and national security team, with other officials also reportedly departing amid disagreements tied to U.S. involvement in Iran.
So far, Trump has not released a lengthy personal statement directly attacking or criticizing Gabbard. Instead, previous White House comments had emphasized confidence in her work and praised her service.
Gabbard’s exit is already sending shockwaves through both Republican and Democratic circles because she was one of the most unconventional figures in Trump’s Cabinet — a former Democrat, Iraq War veteran, and outspoken critic of U.S. military intervention abroad.
Her resignation now leaves one of the most sensitive positions in the U.S. government suddenly open at a moment of rising global tensions.
If a top intelligence official suddenly walks away during global instability… Do you believe the real story is ever just “personal reasons”?
