An investigation by NBC News has uncovered a disturbing increase in suicides, suicide attempts, and self-harm incidents inside U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facilities, raising new questions about conditions inside the country’s immigration system.

According to the report, NBC News analyzed more than 1,000 emergency 911 calls placed from six ICE detention centers across the United States over the past year. The calls reportedly document repeated incidents involving detainees threatening suicide, engaging in self-harm, or suffering severe mental health crises while in federal custody.

The investigation suggests the number of self-harm and suicide-related emergencies inside ICE facilities has reached its highest level in more than two decades. Homeland Security officials reportedly argued that the increase is linked to a larger detainee population, while immigration advocates and mental health experts cited overcrowding, prolonged detention, isolation, and lack of adequate psychological care as contributing factors.

The report arrives amid growing scrutiny over detention conditions nationwide. Separate investigations like The Washington Post have also documented rising use-of-force incidents, allegations of medical neglect, and multiple deaths inside ICE custody over the past two years.

NBC News obtained the emergency call logs through public records requests, providing a rare look into what critics describe as an escalating humanitarian and mental health crisis happening largely out of public view.

If detention is meant to protect lives, why are so many people inside ICE facilities calling 911 to survive?
